Historically the Greeks used silver vessels for water and other liquids to keep the contents fresh.
Physicians of the time advised their wealthy patients to use only silver if they wanted to stay healthy. However, the healing properties of silver truly became evident during the bubonic plague.
Whilst millions died a cruel and painful death, one segment of the population was virtually untouched: the “blue-blooded” ruling class. Because their eating utensils were silver, as they used them their systems absorbed trace amounts of minute silver particles. During the years of the plague “blue-bloods” gave their children silver spoons to suck to prevent them catching the plague and is how the expression “Born with a silver spoon in the mouth” started.

The modern era of Silver usage began in 1893 when C. However, with the coming of the antibiotic era and because Colloidal Silver became increasingly expensive to manufacture, Silver rapidly fell into disuse, and the medical ‘memory hole’, and it was replaced first by sulpha drugs, then penicillin (post WWII), and since then by hundreds of specialised antibiotics (which drug companies made millions from because they could patent the drug but not the use of Silver).
Under the onslaught of antibiotic warfare, the second half of the 20th century witnessed the seeming eradication, or at least control, of most of mankind’s ancient plague scourges. Indeed, some major infectious diseases have been virtually wiped out in the modern world.
Yet by the late 1980’s antibiotics had so succeeded in controlling/eradicating most germ diseases that medical researchers and pharmaceutical companies seriously slowed research into new antibiotics, thinking that there was no longer any need for (and not nearly enough ‘big bucks’ to be made from) newer and better antibiotics. Yet by the 1990’s the picture began to change again.
Because more and more germ species previously controlled by antibiotics began to develop ways to combat antibiotics. This in turn gave rise to so-called ‘super-germs’ such as killer E. coli, ‘flesh-eating’ strep A bacteria, multiple antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis bacteria and chloroquine-resistant malarial parasites.
The over-prescription of antibiotics by doctors under pressure from their patients, for ailments where they are useless (e.g. against common viral diseases such as colds and flu); the failure of patients to take the full course of their prescribed antibiotics (allowing germs to recover and develop antibiotic resistance); and the widespread use of low-level antibiotics in animal feed to increase farmer’s profits (historically up to 40% of antibiotics have gone into animal feed), have all helped create antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

In one double-blind study, 66 patients with fresh rupture of the lateral ligament treated surgically were divided in three randomised groups. In the group receiving Serrapeptase, the swelling had decreased by 50% on the third post-operative day, while in the other two control groups (elevation of the leg, bed rest, with or without the application of ice), no reduction in swelling had occurred at that time. The patients receiving Serrapeptase became pain-free more rapidly than the control groups. By the 10th day, all patients were free of pain in the Serrapeptase-treated group.
In a double-blind study, Serrapeptase, was evaluated in a group of 70 patients with evidence of cystic breast disease. Serrapeptase was noted to be superior to placebo for improvement of breast pain, breast swelling and induration, with 85.7% of the patients receiving Serrapeptase reporting moderate to marked improvement.
In a double-blind study, 193 subjects suffering from acute or chronic ear, nose or throat disorders were evaluated. Treatment with Serrapeptase lasted 7-8 days. After 3-4 days treatment, significant symptom regression was observed in the Serrapeptase-treated group, while this was not noted in the control group. Patients suffering from laryngitis, catarrhal rhinopharyngitis and sinusitis noted markedly rapid improvement. The physicians’ assessments of efficacy of treatment were excellent or good for 97.3% of patients treated with Serrapeptase compared with only 21.9% of those treated with placebo.

Obese children with low levels of vitamin D may be more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to new research. The study found that obese children with low levels of vitamin D had higher levels of insulin resistance, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
In the study, researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre measured vitamin D levels in 411 obese children and 87 others of a normal weight, aged between six and 16. They also measured blood sugar levels, insulin levels, blood pressure and body mass index (BMI).
Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin, which is needed to lower blood sugar levels, or when the body's cells become less responsive to the hormone. The study found that those who were obese were more than 3 times more likely to be deficient in vitamin D compared with the non-obese children.
The obese children had more unhealthy diets and were more likely to skip breakfast and consume more fizzy drinks and juices, which contribute to low vitamin D levels.
Dr Micah Olson, who led the study, said: "Our study found that obese children with lower vitamin D levels had higher degrees of insulin resistance." The study findings are published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
A study by researchers at the Heart Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, shows vitamin D contributes to a strong and healthy heart - and that inadequate levels of the vitamin may significantly increase the risk of stroke, heart disease and death, even among people who have never had heart disease.
The researchers found that patients with extremely low levels of vitamin D were 77% more likely to die, 45% more likely to develop coronary artery disease, 78% more likely to have a stroke and twice as likely to develop heart failure compared with patients whose levels were normal.
“The results are quite surprising and very important”, said Heidi May, an epidemiologist with the research team and one of the study authors. “Vitamin D deficiency is easily treated. If increasing levels of vitamin D can decrease some risk associated with these cardiovascular diseases, it could have a significant public health impact.”
Vitamin D supplements may help to combat the effects of age-related eye disease, a study suggests. Researchers said they hope the findings mean that vitamin D supplements could provide a simple and effective way to combat age-related eye diseases, such as macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the most common form of sight loss in the UK, affecting around half a million people. AMD affects the eye's retina and causes the loss of central vision, so the person is left with only side vision.
Lead researcher Professor Glen Jeffery, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, said the blood vessels supplying the retina can become inflamed and accumulate debris as we age.
"In humans this can result in a decline of up to 30% in the numbers of light receptive cells in the eye by the time we are 70 and so lead to poorer vision," he said. However, when vitamin D injections were given every three days for just six weeks, the researchers found that inflammation was reduced, the debris partially removed, and tests showed vision was improved.
